We all know when and where the Melbourne Cup is run each year, but how many of us know about its origins? You may be surprised to learn that the Melbourne Cup was originally run in England in 1756, prior to settlement.
Even more surprising is that horses were not actually invented back then and the local men used to ride their wives or mistresses, an acceptable practice in those days.
The prize money was not as luxurious as it is these days, and in fact the winner would receive a trip for two to the Edinburgh Festival, as well as a new saddle for his wife.
My, how things have changed.
